Anti-semitic is what it was. What Omar said wasn’t subtle. It was flat out Jew hatred. She isn’t being attacked for just criticizing Israel. She didn’t get into a discussion of all the different monies supplied by the myriad of lobbying groups: only the Jews with their money are the objects of her criticism. It’s not as if our representatives in Congress don’t realize Israel is an ally and valuable trading partner whose people like America and share many of our values. No, according to Omar, they are “hypnotized” by the Jews or bought off by their money. “ It’s all about the Benjamins” she says and you think criticizing Jews about money is entirely ok and not at all anti-Semitic. Really? Omar questioned the “allegiance” of American Jews and the loyalty of the many bipartisan supporters of Israel. This questioning of allegiance has a long hateful history in America. “Are Japanese American citizens loyal?”,they asked before putting them in internment camps in WWII. “Will JFK obey the Pope?”, they asked during the 1960 election. Questioning the allegiance of Jews to their countries has been a favorite line of attack by anti-Semites. It comes straight from Goebbels and the Nazis, back to Tzarist secret police, back to the Dreyfus trial. You are whitewashing anti-semitism when you apologize for her questioning the “allegiance” of Jews.
Criticize Israel if you want. Question whether the US- Israel alliance is in US interests or if it should be modified. That is all legitimate. Claim Jews are hypnotizing the world and are using their money to control others: that’s anti-Semitism. Question the allegiance of Jews and supporters of Israel: that’s anti-Semitism. Got it?
