Democrats have a strategic problem. The ardor of the Progressives pushes the candidates so far Left and so far into identity politics that they can’t win the general election. On the other hand a tepid Establishment candidate or a huge flip-flop to the center will risk alienating all those Leftist activists. How do Democrats resolve this split? Despite many prominent never-Trumpers the mass of Republicans and Independents are willing to be much more transactional. They may not like what Trump tweets, but he will nominate the right Supreme Court nominees and stop the Progressives from running wild. Democrats are deeply split by numerous purity tests.
