Democrats Make a Bad Bet Against HydroxyChloroquine

It is bad practice for a lawyer to ask a witness a question without already knowing the answer. It’s an even greater infraction for a gambler to make a bet without knowing the odds. The Democrats and their Mainstream Media allies don’t seem to have absorbed any of that wisdom from legal wizards and odds-makers. They have been staking their future on the answer they don’t know to a question they keep on asking. They are making a big bet on something they don’t know the odds for.

They are attacking Trump’s encouraging words about the drug hydroxychloroquine. They are castigating Trump for suggesting the drug might or might not work to cure Covid-19. They assail him for ordering millions of doses just in case. They say he is not a doctor and has no business recommending any particular drug. He asks, “what do you have to lose?” . This drug is “unproven” they say. He is defying Science they declare

The experts are not as positive as Trump about hydroxychloroquine, but they are not as negative as the Democrats and their media consorts. The responsible authorities have not prohibited its use for Covid-19.

The CDC says studies are being done:

Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are under investigation in clinical trials for pre-exposure or post-exposure prophylaxis of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and treatment of patients with mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19. …

The FDA has allowed emergency use of the drug for Covid-19 and summarized the logic in three points:

  1. The SARS-CoV-2 can cause a serious or life-threatening disease or condition, including severe respiratory illness, to humans infected by this virus;
  2. Based on the totality of scientific evidence available to FDA, it is reasonable to believe that chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulfate may be effective in treating COVID-19, and that, when used under the conditions described in this authorization, the known and potential benefits of chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulfate when used to treat COVID-19 outweigh the known and potential risks of such products; and
  3. There is no adequate, approved, and available alternative to the emergency use of chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulfate for the treatment of COVID19. 6

Recently, the French allowed limited use of the drug for Covid-19 and President Macron paid a visit to the doctor who initially promoted the drug.

The French President did not endorse the use of the drug for Covid-19, but his visit certainly cannot be taken as discouraging to its prospects.

Does the drug work against Covid-19? Is it the miracle cure? Is it any help at all? Who knows for sure? But that is the point. The Democrats have bet the farm on the proposition Trump is a mindless idiot for investigating hydroxychloroquine when they have no clue if it will work or not. What if the drug does work? What if Trump turns out to be right? What if his action can be directly tied to saving many thousands of lives who would have otherwise died if the Democrats’ advice had been followed? Without knowing the odds the drug will work, why make this a centerpiece of your party’s position on the pandemic?

Even worse, too many Democrats seem to be fervently hoping the drug does not work. They have cleverly maneuvered themselves into a position where they appear to be rooting for a larger toll of American dead. That is the predicate for their propaganda campaign against Trump. You can see an obscene manifestation of this attitude in their disappointment when new model estimates are released showing a lower death count than the models from two weeks ago.

Maybe a clever lawyer or astute gambler will advise the Democrats to criticize Trump for something else and forget about attacking him over hydroxycholoroquine. If they don’t, unfolding events may give them an answer they did not anticipate, an outcome that makes them losers of a bet they shouldn’t have made.
