Growing up, I was a "victim" of Aunt Jemima advertising. As a boy, I ended up having a positive feeling about middle-aged Black women because they had the best recipe for delicious pancakes. Was that a bad thing? I did not get the connection with slavery. Then again, advertising often presents an idealized version of reality, something pleasant that will get you to like their image and thus their product. Will you be happy if you eliminate all positive portrayals of Black people from advertising? At what point does your attempt to eliminate racism end up making Black people invisible.
