Not Guilty? Former FEC Commissioner Says Cohen and Trump Didn't Violate Campaign Finance Law
This week, President Trump's former personal attorney Michael Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison after…
Here’s Dershowitz also saying these were not campaign law violations.
Cohen pleaded guilty on this to get a lower sentence on other things he was guilty of.
Do you have any case with similar facts where someone was found guilty by a jury? I thought not. These two sources and others with actual law degrees and background in campaign finance law say this theory is a stretch and has never been successfully used to convict anyone in a jury trial. They also say the fact pattern in the Edward’s case was much more favorable to the government. So the odds of the government successfully prosecuting this against Trump are effectively zero. However, if this type of case were ever successfully prosecuted, then prosecutions could and logically should be made against the dozens of legislators who had hush money payments paid by the US government to settle cases against people alleging sexual abuse.
