I think you have it backwards. Trump supporters and those who walked away from the Democratic party woke up to the realization they had been systematically lied to by Establishment institutions and Mainstream media and the bureaucrats of both parties. There were no WMD in Iraq, taking down Kadafi was not such a smart move, ISIS was not the JV team, the Arab Spring helped the Islamist extremists not the forces of tolerance and democracy, and the reset with Russia was not so clever but neither was ginning up WWIII. The trade agreements these leaders made did not help people in the MidWest all that much. A huge increase in legal and illegal immigration did not improve the job prospects of working class people. When the economy crashed, the government engineered a bailout of big banks- lower and middle class people got nada. Trump promoted something different: Hillary more of the same. Trump couldn’t say a single sentence without packing it with inaccurate foolish assertions, but he came across as much more genuine than Hillary.
If the so-called wise people had half a clue, they and their pollsters would not have been so terribly wrong and so incredibly surprised by the results of the election. What you call smarter, I call being more thoroughly indoctrinated and blind to reality.
