Interesting that Italy with its government run healthcare had totally inadequate facilities to cope with this pandemic. The point is that all countries took the threat too lightly and did not build extra capacity and stockpile supplies. The US has a strategic petroleum reserve. It needs a strategic medical supplies reserve. The US has laws that preference US based manufacturing in a few areas. It needs to extend these to ensure it has its own capacity to produce drugs and medical supplies. The private economy can run efficiently in combination with government backstops to handle crises. That is part of the mixed economy paradigm the US has historically operated under.
