It will be a travesty if his nomination is derailed. Here’s two reasons why:
First it will be a travesty to reward an orchestrated smear campaign designed to delay the process. We’re not fools. We can see the way the allegations have been raised was intended to stall the process. Why wasn’t Dr. Ford’s allegation given to the Committee investigative staff, FBI, or Maryland police back in July when it could have been handled confidentially as was her wish? Why was it not raised in the thousands of questions and hundreds of hours of testimony? Why were the allegations made public only after the hearings were over? This was deliberate bad faith gaming of the process, a big middle finger to the Senate, and an insult to the intelligence of the American people
The second reason it will be a travesty if his nomination does not go forward is that this will establish a standard for accepting accusations so low it that will leave everyone vulnerable. How can anyone defend themselves from an allegation about an event at an unspecified location, at an unknown date, from over 35 years ago? Shouldn’t there be corroborating witnesses, supporting evidence, and contemporaneous records, and not just an allegation before a person’s career is destroyed? This is not to say such accusations are always false: but there is no way to weed out any false accusations if the standard is to accept such unsupported accusations as true.
