Ok even if Russia was behind the leaks of actual DNC emails, what logic justifies the imposition of sanctions now?
First, on a scale of 1 to 10 of bad acts, this is a -1. They didn’t stuff a ballot box or hack a voting machine. By giving us a window into the truth, they arguably helped the American electorate make a better informed decision.
Second the outrage over Russian “meddling” in the election is of the faux variety. Yes we are shocked to learn there is a report of gambling in that casino. In truth we have done the same or worse. That’s the way the game is played and has been played for 70 years.
Finally I think many of those who voted for more sanctions did so for domestic political reasons divorced from any overall foreign policy perspective or strategy for dealing with Russia. The Democrats are using “Russia-hate” as a club to attack Trump. The Republicans are going along as way to show independence from Trump. This is not to deny there are segments of both parties actively pushing confrontation with Russia and a new round of US interventions. However most don’t actually want to see an escalation of tensions with Russia and may actually be shocked to see where the road they have chosen will take us.
You don’t have to be an apologist for Russia or a dewy-eyed idealist to argue that improved relations and cooperation in specific areas might actually be in the US self-interest.
