Slavery has existed back into antiquity. In Classical times, Whites enslaved people of all races. Black tribes were enslaving one another when feudal Europe had no slaves and labor was done by serfs. Islamic Arab traders had a brisk business buying Black African slaves from Black African tribes for over a thousand years. White European colonialists got into the slave trade a bit late. Then the rise of capitalism and the advance of Western concepts of individual autonomy and responsibility led to the rise of the abolition movement. The political movement to abolish slavery originated in White people of European descent. The idea that all people are created equal and should be treated fairly as individuals is a Western notion coming out of the Enlightenment period. Significant progress has been been made in America toward achieving equality under law. Within the context of history, it is arguably the least racist country that has ever existed.
