The citizenship question is undeniably constitutional having been on the census many times in the past. The Trump administration can be faulted for botching the process for reinstating this question. But it is important information. We need to know how many of the people here are citizens and how many aren’t. One critical reason is that Congressional representation should be based on the number of citizens. Knowing the total number of residents is mandated by the Constitution and is useful for a host of reasons. We need both numbers: it’s not an “either or” situation. Most other countries ask about citizenship- why can’t we?
