The climate change movement is fatally compromised by the realization it is a popular front for various radical agendas. It starts by asserting we must believe there is an existential crisis at our doorstep, that as AOC put it, the world will come to an end in 12 years. It then insists market mechanisms cannot possibly solve the crisis and that the only solution involves a whole series of punitive measures on the populations of the advanced democracies. The movement culminates in a new socialist forms of government. However the program of raising gas taxes, banning cars and planes, shutting coal mines, and getting rid of hamburgers is tremendously unpopular, especially with the working class. Macron ran into quite a lot of resistance.
Even if they can’t quote Marx, the XR base may be dupes of more disciplined and organized cadres of Left Progressives. Just because they live on the streets doesn’t make them authentic lower class people. How many have useless college degrees paid for by their parents and now refuse to apply for the numerous available jobs beneath their supposed station in life? There are some truly poor people on the streets, people unable to get a job, only I’m not sure you see too many of them in XR strategy meetings.
