The NFL players and owners are making a potentially lethal mistake. They are needless antagonizing large segments of their fan base. There are many patriotic fans who overwhelmingly support flag ceremonies honoring America as part of the game experience. To most of them the flag represents national unity that goes beyond partisan politics.
Take a listen to sports radio and you’ll find broad swathes of the sport-viewing public have little sympathy for privileged millionaires complaining about injustice. They are livid over the disrespect shown to the American flag. They couldn’t care less whatever Colin was protesting about. His disrespect of the flag obliterated and discredited his message. Now they want him permanently out of the game. Will they stop watching NFL games as they say they will? Time will tell.
To repair the damage with this fan segment, the NFL should stage huge flag ceremonies and demand all players participate fully. Let the players express their political views elsewhere after the game.
Instead the NFL and the opposition to Trump have taken the bait and fallen into a trap. They are now a mob of flag disrespecters who have helped him don the mantle of flag protector.
