The people who use the term “concentration camps” to describe US detention centers for illegal immigrants are in fact deliberately evoking the Nazi death camps. They are trying to inflame the debate by putting the same label on US attempts to enforce its immigration laws and the Nazi program of genocidal extermination. You may be right that the dictionary or history book definition of “concentration camp” could refer to other things. But it is well understood by the mass of the public to refer directly to the Third Reich. However I am glad to sharpen my language and add the word Nazi if it will please you. My assertion is that the US immigrant detention centers are not the moral equivalent of Nazi concentration camps. Further I insist that those who assert such an equivalence are demeaning the victims of the Nazi Holocaust.
