This is historically inaccurate. There never was a nation of Palestine and the people who lived in the area did not start to regard themselves as Palestinians till the 1960s. In 1947 the Arabs who lived in British Mandate Palestine rejected the UN partition plan that would have established a Palestinian state and given them the lion’s share of the land. Jordan ruled parts of Judea and Samaria and Egypt ruled Gaza till 1967. For two decades no one considered that land part of a Palestinian nation, least of all the Arab residents who lived there. The PLO was not established till 1965. Many of the Arab residents were not indigenous but were recent immigrants or descendants of those who arrived from 1880 or later. The first leader of the PLO, Yasser Arafat, was born in Egypt, like many others of his generation. Palestinian nationalism is a historically recent development, certainly not the “nearly always” phenomenon it is alleged to be.
