This very well-written and impassioned piece that lays out the case against Obama’s policies in Syria, but ultimately lays out the wrong case. The Obama administration should never have encouraged an Arab Spring movement in Syria and never demanded overthrow of Assad precisely because the moderates were not strong enough to win and US intervention would have gotten the US mired in a pointless war with no national interest at stake. With the notable exception of Tunisia, across most of the Islamic majority regions of the Middle East and North Africa the effective choice is often between brutal secular dictatorship and strains of Islamist extremism. The Obama administration helped foment and stoke a civil war in Syria. It’s inept and confusing missteps have kept it going. All across the region it has dithered and demanded, creating chaos and setting the stage for civil wars and factional fighting. It has underestimated the threat of Islamist extremism and not realized how it’s own actions have helped that threat to grow. That’s why Obama’s foreign policy was a failure- he interfered just enough to make it all much worse.
