Without the Constitutionally necessary “high crimes and misdemeanors”, any process of impeachment for other purposes, such as “reining in" the President, will be rightly seen as a wholly illegitimate attempt to overturn the election of 2016. Policy disagreements or general dislike are not enough for impeachment.

It’s 2019 already and Republicans control the Senate. So impeachment is a delusional exercise: getting the House to impeach will be a long shot, getting the Senate to convict will never happen. The effort to impeach is convincing many people you still live in denial, unable to accept the result of 2016. Truly, the only right way to defeat Trump is to run a better candidate with a better electoral strategy and a more appealing platform and thereby gain over 270 electoral college votes. I didn’t vote for Trump in 2016, but if the House votes for impeachment, I’ll pull the lever for him in 2020.
