You seemed to have missed the point that Trump is a populist and a nationalist and not so much a libertarian. He views himself as a reality TV personna gone global, an international political rock star. He loves rubbing elbows with people of all races and religions as long as they are famous personalities. The racist Right dislikes his coziness with Jews and Blacks. So does the Progressive Left, which keeps trying unsuccessfully to paint him as a racist anti-Semite.
Your neglect of the nationalist theme leads you to miss the crux of the immigration issue. It is not immigration per se that Trump is objecting to: it is illegal immigration. It is lottery visas and undefended borders. It is sanctuary cities. It is the idea of giving illegal aliens free healthcare. All these things are a big middle finger at the concept of American sovereignty, an attack on our laws, and a denial of the value of American citizenship. Trump’s merit based immigration and temporary worker visa plans refute your framing of the immigration issue. Sure there is a Far Right fringe who oppose all immigration. But that is not what Trump or most of his voters believe.
